1.      INTRODUCTION TO MEAT INDUSTRY
The Meat Industry contains legislation to which food business operators, authorized officers and policy makers may refer for information and a widely agreed view of good practice. Guidance is aimed at both new and established businesses involved in the slaughter, cutting and processing of fresh meat, and especially those subject to veterinary control by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) in Great Britain or the Department of Agriculture and Rural Department (DARD) in Northern Ireland or any other regulatory body at any respective country.
Meat production in Pakistan exceeded 2.2 million metric tons in 2009-2010 and the domestic market for beef is growing at a rate of about 2.73 percent and about 2.9 percent for mutton. The total size of the market for chilled and frozen halal meat in Middle Eastern region is approximately USD 3 billion which shows that the sector holds high potential for growth. Halal meat is also one of the fastest growing segments within the global food trade. Between 2001 and 2009, the global beef trade grew at an average of 10.4 per cent to reach just over $30 billion, according to data available from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). However, the market for Halal beef imports in the Middle East and Southeast Asia alone grew by over 18.2 per cent to reach just under $2 billion a year during that same period. In spite of the huge potential, meat industry in Pakistan faces many challenges. Some of these problems include lack of infrastructure and services for meat processing, lack of exposure to premium markets and their quality and certification requirements, absence of quality meat breeds for higher yields per animal, over regulated meat prices, livestock markets /“Mandis” are in efficient and quality and health standards are either non-existent or loosely defined.
All Pakistan Meat Exporters & Processors Association (APMEPA)
To support and promote meat and allied sector locally and globally, all Pakistan meat exporters & Processor Association is committed to seek opportunities to promote meat industry as a whole through events, knowledge sharing, networking and standardization. It includes the major beef and goat approved slaughtering and cutting companies in Pakistan and also the exporters who have leased their facilities.

 Meat business in Pakistan
1.      Several companies from Pakistan have entered the red meat export business and even more are in the process of entering the market. The oldest and one of the most successful of these is PK Livestock, a Karachi-based abattoir which has been exporting red meat to the Middle East for over two decades.
2.      Zenith, a Lahore-based exporter, became the first Pakistani company to sell beef to Malaysia, after the Malaysian government relaxed its regulatory requirements for Pakistani exporters.
3.      Others, such as OMC and the Al Shaheer Corporation, have also successfully begun exporting to the Middle East and are aggressively seeking regulatory approvals for markets further afield in Southeast Asia.
4.      Pakistan’s total meat exports may come close to $100 million in 2011 and could surpass the $500 million mark in about five years.
